participant reflections
“Clive’s lighting design was a masterclass in simplicity and control.”
“Clive’s lighting design was a masterclass in simplicity and control. He is an excellent tutor: patient, generous with his time, open in sharing the knowledge and experience he has gained as a professional photographer, and able to explain complex ideas clearly. He is also a thoroughly enjoyable person to talk with, whether about his own projects, photography more widely, or the decisions behind an image.”
“It helped us grow in confidence and develop a more refined artistic eye, learning to find a balance between our subject, the light and the intention behind each image.”
“From learning how to shape light around a dancer to discovering how to follow their movements and enter their world, the experience opened the door to a universe that was entirely new to me. This workshop was a truly immersive photographic experience. It helped us grow in confidence and develop a more refined artistic eye, learning to find a balance between our subject, the light and the intention behind each image. And then came the final stage of the process: seeing our photographs brought to life as beautiful fine-art prints.”
“From directing dancers to mastering light, shadows and camera settings, I learned so much.”
“A huge thank you to Clive for his generosity, patience and outstanding teaching. From directing dancers to mastering light, shadows and camera settings, I learned so much. Beyond his talent, I discovered a truly approachable and inspiring person.”
clive boothClive Booth is a photographer and filmmaker known for atmospheric portrait, fashion and beauty work. His photographs are recognised for their use of available and continuous light, selective focus and an intimate, cinematic sense of story.
Photographer and filmmaker Clive Booth began his career as a graphic designer before being invited by legendary British fashion photographer Nick Knight to shoot backstage at London Fashion Week. There, he developed his distinctive style of selective focus using only Canon prime lenses, shooting in natural, available light to give his work an atmospheric, ethereal quality.
Working across stills, moving image, VR and fine-art archival print, his experimental approach and use of new technologies have given him many Canon firsts and attracted international clients including MAC Cosmetics, L’Oréal, Intel, Aston Martin and LVMH.
Wanting to make a difference through authentic and meaningful storytelling, Clive carefully selects work with strong social value. This ethos began with a long-term project on the Scottish island of Islay with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, creating portraits of lifeboat crews at home and at sea that capture the bravery and selflessness of volunteers.
Passionate about arts education, Clive teaches locally and works with charities and the Canon Young People Programme. In 2022, he led Ideas Foundation workshops celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with work displayed on digital billboards nationwide. He returned in 2023 for the “Coronation Generation”, marking King Charles III’s Coronation.
Recent work includes directing a narrative VR film for Birmingham Royal Ballet for neurodiverse young people who cannot ordinarily attend live theatre, and a powerful photographic portrait project highlighting world-first research into the mental and physical wellbeing of elite dancers. This work was exhibited as part of Health and Wellbeing Week at World Expo, Osaka, Japan, in 2025.
